It's now late September and the 2009 ALS 5K Walk is less than a month away. The Fighting Italians team is gearing up for the October 17th walk at UC Irvine and is hoping that we can once again be the largest walking group (for a unprecedented 3rd year in a row!).

A big GIANT thank you  goes out to Chris Churn- Sergio's old school buddy who was the very first person to help the cause. Unfortunately, he won't be able to make the walk but signed up to be a virtual walker for the team (and made a donation too!).

Other virtual walkers who donated to the cause include dear friends of Sergio's sister, Sonia- Thanks you Greg and Patty Liekhus for your generous donation to a cause they hold very dear to their hearts and a shout out goes out to Brad and Betsy Thayer who can't attend but donated to the team because they really care about Sergio and the fight against ALS. A big Italian hug goes to you all for getting on board and backing us up every step of the way!

We are really looking forward in seeing as many of our wonderful family and friends at the walk. We hope you can be there but if not- we hope you will sign up and be a part of the team.

The walk is less than a month away- Plan to be a part of this very important event. Join the team. Click on the links below to join:

Update on Sergio:

A few weeks ago, the family thought it best to contact Hospice for some needed homecare help. Many people (including the DeLuca families) were a bit nervous about the hospice program but feel that they have Sergio's care in their best interest are here to help in anyway they can.

He has been seen by a visiting nurse and doctor. They take his vitals and make sure Sergio is doing ok and is comfortable.

Just recently, they started Sergio on morphine to help with the pain he gets from sitting all day and to help give him the rest he needs at night. So far, things seem to be going well.

One terrific son!

Frankie has decided to stay home and do independent studies again this semester so that he can be close to his dad and help him whenever he is needed.  Frankie is Sergio's hands/ feet and speech. It is very easy to see that Frankie loves his father a lot. He is an amazing young man and the whole DeLuca family is very proud of him.

Frankie checks his emails daily and is happy to help his dad in responding to the emails he gets.
