Staying alive is a 24 hour job...

Sergio has some very good friends, but one in particular has done a lot for him. Chris La Fosse and his wife Heather, have done quiet a bit of research on alternative medicines and found a doctor in Tijuana, Mexico (Dr. Leon) who has developed live stem cell injections which come from specially raised shark, sheep and goat. Once a month, Sergio goes to Mexico for stem cell injection treatments. He goes with Chris, Heather and Sonia, and the doctor injects billions of shark, sheep and goat cells into him. The doctor gives him five injections on every visit.  He also gets injected with a special solution specially made by Dr. Leon for Sergio. His daughter, Alyssa, injects him daily with the solution. This solution helps his body accepting the new cells. Because this is all natural, the side effects are minimal.

Some people might think that this is a lot of wishful thinking, Sergio believes that at this time of his life, he has nothing to loose and everything to gain with alternative medicine. He feels that these treatments are helping to prolong his life.

The next plan of attack was a hyperbaric chamber. This treatment has been said to give oxygen to the cells and increase energy to help fight his disease. Sergio began this therapy with a skeptical caution but soon found out that hyperbaric treatments gave his a renewed energy and strength that was beginning to diminish. He felt good! Sergio went up to 5 times a week for a few weeks and then, because of the cost of the treatment, had to cut back. We are hoping to raise enough money to purchase an in-home chamber so he can use it anytime, everyday to keep him healthy and strong.

In May of 06, Sergio began seeing Sharon Liekhus (Ken’s sister) who is a Physician’s Assistant. Sharon has been a giant source information and help. Since she has known Sergio for over 25 years, Sharon has been able to give extra special care and advice and Sergio trusts her one hundred percent. It is very important to Sergio to have only those who support his attack plan in his corner and Sharon has been there every step of the way.

With Sharon's help, Sergio was referred to see Diane Wendell, a clinical nutritionist. She is helping him with his daily intake of many different (and needed) vitamins and essential minerals/supplements which is helping to keep Sergio as healthy as possible for as long as possible. Diane has worked with ALS patients in the past is a big supporter of all that Sergio is doing to stay healthy. Blood, hormone and other tests are done on a regular basis to manage and maintain Sergio’s body in the best working order as possible.

Sharon has also referred Sergio to First Care Industrial Medical Center in Garden Grove for physical therapy. He is working with a wonderful therapist, Anna, who is helping him regain and maintain strength with both large and fine motor skills. The staff at “PT”- Physical Therapy has some research on ALS and has designed a program just for Sergio and his condition. It can be tiring at times but Sergio’s “Never Give Up” attitude is keeps fighting each and every day.

Anne helps Sergio with his physical therapy.
